Malekith the Accursed appears in the 2013 live-action film Thor: The Dark World, portrayed by Christopher Eccleston. This version of Malekith led his people in a war against the Asgardians, using an ancient weapon known as the Aether (later revealed to be the Reality Stone), but they were thought to have been destroyed thousands of years ago during a final battle against the Asgardian King Bor. Malekith had survived however, having gone into hiding. In the present, he returns amidst a Convergence and seeks to retake the Aether to use its power to transform the universe by plunging it back into eternal darkness, resulting in a siege on Asgard, leaving him scarred but killing Queen Frigga. Malekith is confronted by Bor’s grandson Thor but not before extracting the Aether from Jane Foster, leaving them stranded. Thor returns to London to battle Malekith, and uses a teleportation device Erik Selvig had created to send the Aether-powered Dark Elf back to Svartalfheim resulting in him being crushed to death by his own ship.
